Most Common Road Hazards And How To Avoid Them

Posted in Uncategorized by admin on Jul 17th, 2011

When going on a road trip, safety has to be a primary concern. Here are some of the more common hazards, and how to avoid or deal with them.

1. Black ice. Black ice is a thin coat of ice on the road, that is generally not visible to the motorist, and often forms on bridges. The only answer to black ice is to drive carefully. If fog is clearing or the temperature is just above or just below freezing, black ice is likely to be present and you should slow down.

2. Animals. Animals often find their way onto the road in rural ares. Slow down when driving along roads which have poor visibility at the edge.

3. Road debris. Keep a good distance from trucks, either open pickups or flat beds, that have loads simply tied down or secured. Call 911 if you see an obviously unstable load, as long as it is safe to do so.

4. Potholes and uneven road surfaces. These are more common in rural areas, where funds for road repair can be limited. In some cases, you can drive around a pothole, otherwise reducing speed as much as possible is the best tactic.
